amai! is a large-scale citizen science initiative about artificial intelligence that was launched in 2021. The initiative is based on a unique combination of citizen science and science communication.
Mission and Vision
Amai! aims to inspire, advise, and activate citizens about Artificial Intelligence in daily life, with a focus on work, environment, mobility, and health. In this way, we all contribute to innovation, participation, and wonder in Flanders. Amai! thus makes a positive contribution to society through awareness and innovative project funding. We achieve this by bringing together ideas, civil society, and experts.
Societal focus Central to this approach is that we always start from societal themes, in order to also appeal to an audience that is not spontaneously interested in a technical subject such as artificial intelligence. In the Amai! project, the themes of mobility, health, climate & environment, and work were chosen.
What does amai! do ?
On the one hand, amai! organizes activities in which we both inform and ask citizens about their reflections, experiences, and ideas regarding AI in daily life.
On the other hand, amai! provides project grants for the development of several AI applications per year. The ideas for these applications are collected from the citizens and serve as inspiration for the consortia that submit a project proposal.
Since its inception, it is estimated that amai! has reached more than a million Flemings through collaborations with, among others, the public radio stations, social media, and its own website. The project made citizens think and formulate questions for AI and collected almost 1000 ideas from citizens about how AI could improve their lives. Based on these ideas, amai! also developed the amai! card game.
